This week I catch up with Mark Coker, the CEO of Smashwords. Mark, who has been a guest on the podcast before, gives up an update on the latest from Smashwords in the month of its three year anniversary, as well as where he sees the company going. We also talk about e-book pricing, new business models such as e-book subscriptions, and the emerging e-book as an app market.
Overall its a good call with one of the most knowledgeable guys in the business. Check it out, and don’t forget t subscribe to the podcast in iTunes!

Wow, this is an amazing interview. I’ve been looking at Smashwords because I’ve heard so much good about it. After this interview, I’m more convinced that it’s the way to go with my books. I can’t wait to publish there now.
Great interview and thanks for putting this out there.
This is a most informative podcast. Mark Coker is demonstrating that he is on the leading edge of commercial technology with respect to ebook publishing. He has created a vehicle that puts the writer firmly in the driver’s seat.
I am a recently published Smashwords author non-fiction (Not Like My Mother – Becoming a sane parent after growing up in a Crazy family)
I am an older woman who is not computer brilliant….Smashwords made it so easy for me…and Mark responded to me individually with a personal email almost immediately to my questions. Mark is a man who is completely walking his talk. He is sincere and supportive for authors…he is living the Smashwords mission. I wish him and his company the very best that is possible for success. If only more businesses were following his model. Do what you say you are going to do and do it with integrity.
May he make billions!!!!!!!
Excellent interview Mike. It was heartwarming to hear Mark’s perspective on the world of publishing as an industry transitioning into a model of abundance and inclusivity. Thanks to both of you, for all you do to make these times more exciting and productive.
I’m a happy Smashwords author. I have been published by traditional/legacy publishers and worked in the book publishing industry for over 20 years. I published my first e-book with Smashwords in Sept 2009 and several since, including previously published books. I received my first royalty payment in July 2010 and each quarter the royalty has grown. I have followed Mark Coker’s blogs and interviews avidly since 2009 and have found his instincts have been proved accurate time and time again. I highly recommend Smashwords to writers considering making the move to e-books.
Greetings:
Mark’s insights were noted with interest, especially the “secrets”. But as he said, it always comes down to a compelling story and word of mouth for driving success.
Thanks Mark, for providing us aspiring authors the opportunity for success.
Edward
Great interview. Mark Coker gives his balanced but hard-hitting interpretation of the state of ebooks and indie publishers.
